I have always loved taking photos. Before I understood why, I began to realise that many of my happiest moments came from walking around with a camera. I am still not completely sure why, but I think part of the reason is the focus I am encouraged to give my surroundings when I am taking photos, and consequently how much more I see and experience.
As I continued to shoot, I became more intentional about how I captured images. This led me to begin my own projects, such as the Abstract collection. The project began during the pandemic and connected me with a community of photographers around the world who were confined to their homes and trying to capture beauty within the spaces they lived in.
The project was initiated by photographer Sean Tucker and artist Jeffrey Sandoris, to whom I am very thankful. During this time, I discovered how much I enjoyed creating compositions where the viewer did not immediately understand what they were looking at. To me, this meant that the photograph worked because of how it had been made, not simply because of what the viewer associated with the subject.
This approach of building something abstract through composition and light is something I have tried to carry into other areas of my photography, so that an image is both a photograph of its subject and a composition of shapes made abstract.
